Itinerary

Day 1- Florence: Arrival at Galilei Airport, Pisa. Transport to Palazzo Niccolini al Duomo  in the heart of the city of Florence.  Join us for a welcome reception at the hotel. 
Overnight in Florence.  Meals:  D          

Day 2- Florence: Museums and Gardens
Today, we tour the Villa Medici in Fiesole, where the gardens were created at the dawn of the Renaissance.  Once the host of the Platonic Academy of Lorenzo the Magnificant.  The Villa Medici bears witness to the newly born love of art and freedom theat was soreading tjrough Europe during this age. Lunch will be traditional Tuscan fare.  The afternoon is free or join the group at the Uffizi Museum to view the Botticelli room, as well as a short visit to the Medici-Riccardi Museum to view the chapel and works by Benozzo Gazzoli.  Experience a restaurant of your choice in Florence for dinner.

Day 3- Florence: Gardens and Museums
This morning visit the Villa Gamberaia, Settignano. The house of the Villa Gamberaia embodies the Tuscan ideal of restraint and proportion.  Combined with its exquisite gardens, it is considered a mature villa of the Renaissance.  Lunch at the enotecca near the villa.  Return to Florence for free time or tour San Lorenzo and the Academy with the group. Enjoy the evening as you please.

Day 4- Siena Area: Chianti, Views and Hill Towns
After breakfast, the first stop is Poggio ai Caiano, another Medici Palace of innovation and beauty.  The frescos by Andrea del Sarto Pontormo's Verrtumnus and Pomona (1520) are of note.  Lunch at Badia Coltibono in Chianti.  Continue to the picturesque city of Radda in Chianti and lodging at the Palazzo San Niccolo, a villa dating back to the 14th century.  Enjoy the rest of the evening as you please. Cooking classes are available.

Day 5- Siena: We take a ride to Siena. Then we enjoy a guided tour of the beautifully articulated Gothic architecture and lively squares of this Medieval city. Return to the villa after lunch or tour the city further on your own. Tonight we enjoy dinner in Radda at a local restaurant. Overnight in Radda in Chianti  Meals: B D                             

Day 6- San Gimignano and Lucca:
This morning, we tour the Villa Centinale , then depart for San Gimignano.  Of its sixty Medieval towers, fourteen remain. The towers contribute to the picturesque quality of this famous hill town creating a distinctive skyline.  The fifth of the cities fgates is attributed to Napolean Bonaoarte's sister, Elisa, who ruled Tuscany for a brief period.  Lunch at Osteria del Carcere then continue to Villa la Principessa near Lucca.  Dinner is on your own.

Day 7 -Lucca: 
This morning, we enjoy a guided walking tour of Lucca.  Spend some more time dstolling around the city on your own or luxuriate for the afternoon at the natural thermal baths of the Grotta Guisti in Montecatini.  Dinner in Lucca on your own.
Overnight in Lucca.  Meals:  B

Day 8- Lucca: Villas, Gardens and Concert       Visit the Villa Reale in Marlia. This garden has some remaining aspects of the Renaissance and many influences of the 18th and 19th centuries.  It was renovated during the reign of Elisa.  Of interests are the features which linger from the Renaissance.  One can imagine summer nights long past with courtiers rushing to take seats at the outdoor theatre.  Lunch is prepated at the Fattoria Colle Verde.  Dinner is in a local trattoria followed by a selection from the live concert series in Lucca later that evening.

Day 9- Lucca:
Travel to the Villa Garzoni in Collodi.  The Villa Garzoni ends the great chain of palaces in the hills north of Lucca where the present renaissance palace stands on the foundations of a Medieval castle.  The ramped enterance to the village passes through the palace; hence, the gardens are located atypically to the side.  Lunch at a local trattoria.  The afternoon continues with a ride through the scenic Tuscan hills, then a visit to the spectacular Villa Torrigiani with gardens by Le Notre.  The farewell dinner is at the Hotel Principessa.

Day 10- Journey home:  Meals:
